ANKARA - Distribution of Kızılırmak river water will come to a halt from tomorrow onward because recent strong rains have filled the dams in the capital, Ankara mayor Melih Gökçek announced Tuesday.

"Water of 150 million cubic meters, which has recently accumulated in the dams, can meet Ankara’s water needs for five months. Thus, we will cut the distribution of Kızılırmak water, whose energy cost is very high, and start to deliver the water from the Kurtboğazı and Çamlıdere dams," Gökçek said in a written statement.

Upon the statement, Republican People’s Party, or CHP’s mayoral candidate Murat Karayalçın said Gökçek’s recent announcement is the "confession of his irresponsibility."

"Despite reports on the dangers of Kızılırmak water, Gökçek always said the water is clean. Then why is he cutting off the water that he previously said was clean?" Karayalçın asked in his written statement.

Gökçek’s distribution of the water from the Kızılırmak river has drawn harsh criticism. The Middle East Technical University, or METU, published a report that said the water is unhealthy.
