A van containing half a ton of amonium nitrate and TNT was found yesterday on the anniversary of September 11 in a multi story car park in the center of Ankara. Parked in a lot in Ankara's Sihhiye district, the Mercedes Vito van was sniffed out by a police dog named "Rocky."

According to authorities, the explosives contained in the van were powerful enough to have "wiped Sihhiye off the map" had they been detonated. Police inspections of Ankara vehicles had already been on high alarm due to the sensitive nature of the September 11 anniversary, and when security forces, joined by the bomb-sniffing "Rocky" dog, made their rounds in the Ankara parking lot where the van in question was located, it did not take forces long to discover that the van had been loaded with explosives. Cell phone transmissions were quickly blocked in the area, due to police belief that the plan may have been to use a remote detonator on the van, and the surrounding environs were immediately evacuated. Thus far, no one has been arrested in the case.
