BODRUM - Animal lovers were devastated by the lethal poisoning of nine dogs and six cats from chemical-laced food left on the streets of Bodrum. Five other dogs ingested the poison, but were saved by residents and Bodrum vets.

Residents of Bodrum's Torba town in the Muğla district were shocked by the dead dog and cat bodies on the street on Sunday morning. After an investigation by the Municipality’s vets, it was discovered that scattered food laced with agricultural chemicals caused the deaths of the animals.

More than 30 other incidents of similar animal deaths in Torba raised questions with residents. "The number of dogs and cats killed by poisoning was over 30 in Torba. They are mixing agricultural chemicals with meat and scattering these food on streets. These poisoned foods kill birds as well. It is distressing that those people poisoning dogs and cats have not been caught yet," said animal lover Hikmet Kaya.

Ali Tan Akyaız, the vet at Bodrum Animal Shelter, said that the result of their investigation concluded nine dogs and six cats were killed by the poisoned food and several other dogs and cats were saved with last-minute interference. Five dogs were also poisoned in the same way in Kuyucak.
