ISTANBUL - The most important awards of the Golden Boll Film Festival seem to be distributed somewhat fairly, and have erased the atmosphere of competition. At the event, which ended Saturday, the jury presided by Nuri Bilge Ceylan, awarded Nadir Sarıbacak with best actor, Görkem Yeltan best actress and Mahmut Fazıl Coşkun best director.
The Golden Boll International
Film Festival warmed the cockles on Saturday night’s award ceremony. The 16 important awards of the festival were distributed somewhat fairly and has erased the atmosphere of competition.
The outstanding jury of the National Competition, headed by director Nuri Bilge Ceylan and consisting of actors Mazlum Çimen, Özgü Namal, Meltem Cumbul and Bulut Aras; writer Füruzan; director Özcan Alper; cinematographer Uğur İçbak; and movie critic Zeynep Tül Akbal Süalp, decided to skip the award for best studio this year.During the ceremony that hosted acclaimed names of Turkish cinema, film critics and local guests as well as the governor İlhan Atış and mayor Aytaç Durak, the National Student Film Competition and Mediterranean Country’s Short Film Competition awards were presented before it proceeded to National Competition award announcements.
Alongside Turkish filmmakers, Greeks, Portuguese and Spanish directors collected awards at the competition. When they took the stage, some told the audience they weren’t expecting to win an award; it was even honorable enough for them to participate in the Golden Boll.
After much-admired Turkish singer Ferhat Göçer, whose main profession is as a surgeon, took sang for the audience, the host of the night Şebnem Dönmez called for the Cinema Critics Association, or SİYAD, jury to represent the SİYAD Best Film Award. The SİYAD jury, which consisted of daily Radikal’s cinema critic Uğur Vardan, Özgür Şeyben and Yusuf Güven, said they were giving the award because the film touched upon the year’s present but unsolved topic. "İki Dil Bir Bavul" (On the Way to School), which is the story of a Turkish teacher who teaches the Turkish language to Kurdish children in an eastern village, was strongly applauded and the directors of the film Orhan Eskiköy and Özgür Doğan attributed the award to all the teachers and children that live the cultural dilemma.
One award canceled
When the head of the jury Ceylan came on stage to represent the National Competition Awards on behalf of all the members of the jury, he said it was his first time at the Golden Boll and that it is so hard to be a member of the jury in one’s own country.
Underlining that they have realized there are no existing technical problems in Turkish film anymore and the quality of film has developed a lot, Ceylan said presenting a studio award was nonsense.
"Films are not shot in only one studio or laboratory. So that’s why we did not want to choose a film for this award," he said, adding that the award should be removed from the competition. The Best Editing Award went to Frank Nacache with "Pandora’nın Kutusu" (Pandora’s Box) while Best Script went to Pelin Esmer for "11’e 10 Kala" (10 to 11). Jury members praised Esmer for her success with her first film script.
Best Director of Photography was one of the first awards that was shared by two films. Özgür Eken’s film "Süt" (Milk) and Ercan Özkan’s film "Pus" (Haze) shared the award.
The film "Uzak İhtimal" (Wrong Rosary), which is the story of a young muezzin Musa, Sister Clara and a bibliopole Yakup, collected three awards in a row. Best Actor went to the film’s Nadir Sarıbacak and Best Actress went to Görkem Yeltan but it was not enough for the film. Ceylan said if a film’s actors are successful it is also about the quality of the director.
Than he announced that Best Director was awarded to "Uzak İhtimal’s" director Mahmut Fazıl Coşkun.Sarıbacak told the Hürriyet Daily News & Economic Review that he was proud to receive a best actor award in cinema because he had been working in theater for many years.
The festival also gave a chance to the public to vote for the films they watch by giving a number from 1 to 10 and putting them in ballots placed outside the gates of the cinema halls. The public chose "Kız Kardeşim Ğ Mommo" (The Bogeyman). An award titled with the legendary name of Turkish cinema Yılmaz Güney, who was from Adana, was given by Ceylan, who also received the award years ago. Before announcing the winner he said the jury members were surprised there was no Yılmaz Güney Museum in Adana even though all the cities abroad support their artists by opening museums in their names.
"İki Dil Bir Bavul" (On the Way to School) received the Yılmaz Güney Award. One of the directors of the film, Doğan, said they were surprised they were appreciated by both juries.
Not surprisingly the hesitative jury gave the Best Turkish Film Award to two films. The decision was a victory of women: "Köprüdekiler" (Men on the Bridges) directed by Aslı Özge and "11’e 10 Kala" directed by Pelin Esmer.
