ISTANBUL - Universit? del Caff, or UDC, to which 22,000 people from around the world have so far attended, has opened its 14th coffee education center worldwide in Istanbul. The center provides technical and practical education about coffee to all coffee lovers
Italy’s most famous coffee brand Illy, which has been offering real Italian coffee for 140 years, has opened its 14th coffee education center worldwide in Istanbul’s Etiler district.
Presenting the 75-year-old Italian coffee culture, Universit? del Caf della Turchia, offers courses to all professionals in the food and drink sector including baristas, cafes, hotels, restaurants. The center provides technical and practical education about coffee including the coffee plant, the history of coffee, personal management, financing, psychology and sociology, marketing, and caf design.
UDC International Director Morena Faina said opening a coffee education center in Turkey was very important to Illy. "With Universit? del Caf della Turchia, we aim to improve coffee culture of food and drinking sector professionals, and all process from coffee bean to coffee cup," he said.
For producers and customers
Faina said the first coffee education center was founded 10 years ago in Italy, adding that their target audience was professionals at first and then they had extended their project all around the world to provide education for both producers and customers.
Faina said they provided education to 22,000 people in 13 locations in the world. "The education is completely scientific and academic. We can arrange the education program considering the requests and needs of participants. When they finish the education, the participants receive Artista e Manager del Caffe certificate."
Illy Turkey distributor Barista Kahvecilik Executive Board Chairman Mehmet Fırat Çelik said it was a project they had been planning for a year since they became Illy’s Turkish distributor. "UDC’s Turkish branch is in partnership with Whirpool Culinary Arts Academy, which is the one and only private culinary academy approved by the Ministry of Culture and accredited by City Guilds," he said.
Çelik said they would invest 100,000 euros in the coffee education center, adding that they planned to educate 1,500 people in 24-person capacity classes through the end of the year.
Illy Export Regional Director Francesco Cassani said Turkish people loved tea and Turkish coffee but the Illy’s coffee was also very delicious. Cassani said Illy has been in the Turkish market for 10 years, adding that 6 million Illy espressos had been sold in more than 50,000 places in 114 countries. In the coffee education center, which is equipped with multimedia equipment, there is also a taste laboratory and a coffee bar.
