DENİZLİ - Coming to Denizlispor College with a student exchange program, American Alejandro Miguel Aguilar enjoys his friends’ amity in the Aegean town of Denizli so much that heÊis notÊbothered that they changed his name. Ê
Three months after his arrival to Denizli with a project of Delikliçõnar Rotary Club, Aguilar is now seen as a symbol of the college. His friends see him as so integrated into the school and Turkish culture that they even changed Alejandro’s name.
Turkish students are calling him "Ali İhsan," and Alejandro is happy with that. "At first I found that odd, but then I am used to it, and I love this name," Alejandro said. "After I return home, I will keep using it as a nickname."
Delikliçõnar Rotary Club chairman Ömer Bağcõ is happy that the exchange project has served useful in terms of sustaining contact between different cultures.
"Ali İhsan comes from York City, Pennsylvania," he said. "He learned the Turkish culture here, enjoyed the Turkish food."
Ba?cõ added that about 8,000 students between the ages of 16 and 18 are in this program, which targets international understanding.
"Students go there to learn about the country’s culture and lifestyle," he added.
