Alcohol tax changes on the horizon

ANKARA - The Ministry of Finance is set to change the how it implements the private consumption tax, or ÖTV, on alcoholic beverages.

The proportional taxation on distilled alcoholic beverages will be annulled, while all fixed ÖTV’s implemented on alcoholic beverages will be compensated.
The new implementation will exclude the unofficial "national drink" Rakı, a non-sweet anise-flavored drink. Based on the new tax regime, the ÖTV implemented on Rakı will remain the same. The Turkish drink will be considered to be the same status as Greece’s Uzo and the ÖTV compensation between Rakı and all other beverages with high alcohol levels will also be maintained.
