Yesterday, for the first time in five years, Turkey’s Grand National Assembly did not break for Friday prayer. A group of AKP MPs left the room once it became clear that TBMM Vice President Güldal Mumcu (CHP-Izmir), who was chairing a budget meeting, meant to continue without breaking for Friday prayer. Only 12 AKP representatives, including seven women, remained in their seats.

On Fridays, parliament traditionally breaks for lunch around prayer time. Mumcu apparently intended to wrap up the budget meeting before breaking for a late lunch.

“The AKP rows are completely empty. We will have to talk amongst ourselves. Our friends have probably gone to the Friday prayer, but devotion needs to go into the work undergone here, too. Only god knows who is a better Muslim,” said CHP MP for Istanbul, Mehmet Sevigen.
