A member of the ruling AK Party and MP for Aksaray, Ramazan Toprak, has made astonishing remarks about the president of Van Univeristy, who was imprisoned on charges of corruption last week. Toprak said the president, Yucel Askin, is of Armenian origin. “I hear a hundred presidents from universities all over Turkey are planning a protest gathering in Van,” Toprak continued, “it is all absurd. We have assigned an Armenian-origin president to Van, where Armenia still has plans.”
Toprak also said the efforts by other presidents to lend support to the imprisoned Askin have a secret agenda: “What they are trying to do is pressurize the government on the new legislation for universities. We will not tolerate this. The PM will remove some certain presidents from the office.”
“Presidents of the state universities would do better to mind their own business than go to Van,” Toprak added.
When asked about the suggestions that the government’s EU orientation is more to do with diminishing the army’s power in the country, Toprak said: “It is partly true. Decision-making processes will gradually be handed over to civilian bodies. The army is a hundred percent behind this. There is no hidden agenda.”
