FRANKFURT - Air Berlin, Germany’s second-largest airline, said Turkey’s ESAS Holding plans to acquire a 15.3 percent stake to strengthen its business.
ESAS executed a share-purchase agreement with UBS on Saturday, Air Berlin said in an e-mailed statement yesterday. ESAS already operates discount carrier Pegasus Airlines from Turkey to destinations including Frankfurt, Munich and Berlin.
The purchase requires approval by the German Federal Cartel Office, Bloomberg reported. ESAS operates Turkish private carrier Pegasus.Air Berlin earlier this year lost one of its key shareholders when U.S. billionaire Len Blavatnik sold his 18.9 percent stake in the carrier, leaving the market guessing who bought the holding, Reuters reported.
