Mehmet Ali Ağca’s solicitor, Mustafa Demirbağ stated that they were “doing all we need to do. We will not go to the police station.” Demirbağ commented that they were respectful of the Minister’s wish for the referral of the case to the Supreme Court and added that Ağca had taken a walk under the rain and drank some tea at the sea front on the first day of his release. Demirbağ, who disappeared after Ağca’s release, responded to allegations that his client had fled abroad by assuring journalists that “Ağca is in Turkey”. Rumours that Ağca, released on January 12, from Kartal prison, had left the country, were strengthened by his failure to report to the police for the second day in a row.

For this reason, Mustafa Demirbağ held a press conference at his office in Pendik, Istanbul, and told journalists that “Ağca is a free man. He is under no obligation to report to the police station. He is neither under observation nor in detention. We are carrying out the required legal procedures concerning his military service and hospital. We will not go to the police station.”

Tea at the sea front

Demirbağ explained that following his check-up at Gata Haydarpaşa Hospital, Ağca went for a walk under the rain on Kadıköy and Kartal sea fronts and stopped off for some tea. He added that Ağca was “reading the articles written about him, and [was] very interested in what people have to say. He is a calm person and refuses to be a political tool for any group”.

Demirbağ also stated that he and his client were respectful of Cemil Çiçek’s application to the Supreme Court.
