ADANA-Only one of the 14 deputies of the southern province of Adana turned up to a meeting Saturday, where the public were supposed to air their concerns.
The Parliament Joint Working Groups meeting organized by nongovernmental organizations was a major disappointment for those who were present. The groups were first introduced last October so that deputies could have an idea about the concerns the public had.
Parliament Joint Working Group spokesman at the Adana Forum, Mustafa Çinkılıç, said similar meetings would be held in 20 provinces around the country. "The aim of the meeting is to discuss the problems of Adana and communicate them to the deputies," he said.
All 14 deputies invited
He said they had invited all 14 deputies of the province to the meeting. "Only Nevin Gaye Erbatur from the (Republican People’s Party) CHP, showed up. (Nationalist Movement Party) MHP deputy Kürşat Atılgan, CHP deputies Hulusi Güvel and Tacidar Seyhan and the AKP's (Justice and Development Party) Nejdet Ünüvar called and said they had prior engagements. The other nine deputies didn’t even respond," he said. Photos of the deputies who did not show up were placed on their vacant seats at the meeting.
Çinkılıç said they would hold a meeting every month and would continue invite all 14 deputies. "We expect the deputies we elected to listen to our problems," he said.
CHP’s Erbatur tried to defend her fellow parliamentarians, saying: "Today I’m here and tomorrow some one else will come. All deputies know the problems of Adana well and are working very hard to solve them."The AKP has six deputies from Adana, while the CHP and MHP have four each.
