NICOSIA - That a Greek Cypriot parliament member was accused of treason for signing a proposal regarding Turks’ human rights in Greece shows the extent of the hostility against Turks in Greek Cyprus and Greece, said Turkish Cyprus Foreign Minister Hüseyin Özgürgün on Tuesday.

Greek Cyprus main opposition party Democratic Rally, or DISI, deputy Christos Purguridis signed a proposal regarding the human rights of the Turkish minority in Rhodes and Kos at the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, or PACE. Purguridis’ signature angered the Greek government, and he was accused of treason, resulting in DISI’s declaration that the party would not renew the deputy’s status at PACE, said Özgürgün.

"The fact that Purguridis, who had the courage to adopt the view that this mentality should be questioned, was accused of treachery, and his exclusion from his party shows how the perception of Turkish existence among the Greek Cypriots is outdated," said Özgürgün.
