ISTANBUL - Many historic sites and artifacts in Istanbul are being misused. Many of these ancient gems of the city are denied maintenance and repair, causing a loss of luster over time.
The state of these historic sites, such as the Madrasah Islamic theological school which is filled with nothing but the smoke of hookahs, are shocking tourists. The Court of Account's report on maintenance and repair projects for historic sites and artifacts emphasized that everything must be true to its original. One ugly example is of artifacts presented to foundations for preservation with posters and advertisements stuck all over them.
President of the Hagia Sofia museum, Halük Dursun said the situation is very sad. Buildings that were built for certain purposes have either become derelict or are being used for different unmonitored functions, which result in extensive damage. Only buildings that have day-to-day functions, like libraries, schools and care homes, are protected by the institutions that run them. Writer and researcher Mustafa Armağan found a very bad case of misuse at Koca Sinan Paşa Medresesi when the site was rented out by an organization but used by prostitutes. Armağan said the situation would only worsen unless they start being preserved.
