Abdullah Gul held a joint press conference with members of the Kurdish-backed DTP today in Ankara, explaining that he had discussed his plans if in fact he is to be elected as president of the Turkish Republic. Said Gul, "I made requests to all the various political parties for meetings.
Today I met with the DTP. I explained my plans for if I am personally elected, and explained that I plan to embrace all the people of the nation."
DTP Co-chairman Ahmet Turk delivered a signal of support for Gul's candidacy at the press conference, noting "We want things to come to the point of being solved. We have expectations, as do the people. A new period is beginning. At the head of the problems is the Kurdish problem. We want these problems to be solved through civilian solutions. We asked Gul what he would do about these things. If what we want is for the will of the people to be reflected, we need someone who will not only deal with the question of the turban, but with democracy, and we need a president who will embrace everyone. We think that Gul will meet these needs. However our final decision will be made after talking with our collegues from the party."
