FETHİYE - Nif village’s upcoming cherry celebrations will help raise money to buy a library for a village school.
Ferat Uysal, mayor of Nif in the Aegean region, is pleased to invite visitors to the village’s cherry festival, to be held on June 27.
"We are proud to extend an invitation to everyone who would like to come to our cherry festival. Celebrating another good cherry harvest is very important for us and it would be very nice to share it," Uysal said.
His deputy, Mehmet Demirer, said that for one night the village school will become a hive of activity and its children will benefit from the ticket sales at the entrance. Tickets will cost 5 Turkish Liras. The entrance fee will help fund building work and a planned library.
In the mountains behind Fethiye is a valley cooled by mountain breezes 900 feet above sea level. Nestled within its forested slopes lies the village of Nif-Arpacık. Crystal clear streams and rustling plane and walnut trees create a rural idyll. The altitude makes for a temperature that is usually 10 degrees lower than that on the sweltering coastal plain.
The winters are colder and the rainfall higher than on the coast. This means that the climate provides an ideal location for the production of large, juicy cherries. Nif is one of several villages in the region where cherries are the economic mainstay.
Local cherries and simple, but tasty, village food will be on sale. In the evening there will be a concert including some popular Türkü (traditional Turkish folk music) singers. For foreigners this is a way to be introduced to the Turkish village lifestyle.
This year, the village’s celebrations will be enhanced by the presence of the Ölüdeniz Folkloric Dance Group, formed by a group of Brit expatriates.
There will also be a "cherry festival beauty" and a prize for the best cherries, as well as a chance to gorge on cherries. The festival will start at 4 p.m. and continue until midnight.
