ISTANBUL - The name of the Dream Academy’s latest photographic art exhibition "Breaking the Shell" speaks for itself.
While producing a piece of art with a camera can be a challenge at the best of times Ğ a process that requires much insight and technical ability Ğ it takes that much more courage for the disabled, who have to invest double the effort in order to pursue their artistic talents.
The photographs that are on display from April 14-22 at the Beyoğlu Municipality Art Gallery explicitly demonstrate a social responsibility project that has brought out a variety of unnoticed artistic talent. The aim of the Dreams Academy Photography Workshop was to provide an opportunity for disabled people to express themselves and provide an insight into the way they see the world, while at the same time learning the more technical aspects of photography. The eight photographers who took part in the project chose a subject, which they then used as the foundation for the expression and commentary they wanted to portray in their photos.
One of the Dreams Academy philosophies is that Art has no barrier and can be experimented by anyone. The Dreams Academy team said the photography workshop students proved through the exhibition that this was the case, that there was no barrier and this was relayed onto other students, who according to the academy "could not come out of their shells."
Speaking about the project, one workshop participant, Emrah Atayan, said: "I had never taken photographs before but I learnt quickly through the workshops conducted by the Dream Academy teachers, Korhan Karaosel and Aylin Dincel. It was down to them that I photographed and depicted the reality of the poor and suffering." Another participant, Mehmet Kazan, produced a series of photographs depicting people with disabilities participating in sporting activities. "Any kind of difficulty does not put up a barrier to art, sport or success, we proved this and I wanted my photographs to show this." Kazan said.
Speaking about the exhibition, the mayor of Beyoğlu, Ahmet Misbah Demircan, highlighted that the municipality had put a lot of work into paving the way for disabled people and giving them opportunities to live with greater confidence.
"When looking at the photographs in the exhibition remember these are inspired by real life experiences and visions. The exhibition will touch your soul just as it did mine," Demircan said.
