ISTANBUL - A new Turkish film titled "Melekler ve Kumarbazlar" (Angels and Gamblers) is being shot by director Ertekin Akpınar in the northwestern city of Adapazarı. "The film tells the story of the world of men," said Akpınar.
Akpınar said the
film tells a true story about his friends and him. He said he has worked on the film for four-and-a-half years and has met 1,500 to 2,000 people.
"The names of real people living in Adapazarı will be used in the film," he said, adding that "artists, including Cem Davran, Bülent Şakrak, Kutay Köktürk, Nail Kırmızıgül, Hakan Meriçliler and Macit Sonkan will act in the film and the names of the male and female leading actors will be announced later."
Akpınar said before being screened, the film would be sent to national and international festivals, including the Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival. "We are planning to send the film to the festivals in Cannes and Berlin, where New York directors send their films first," he said.
Akpınar said the fact that the film was based on a true story and the places used in the film were real made the film notable. "I am sure that we will get a very good result. I worked hard for the emotional world of this film. That’s why I can clearly say that cinema lovers have not seen a film like this yet."
Akpınar said he loved Nuri Bilge Ceylan’s "Üç Maymun" (Three Monkeys), but found the other films boring. "Mine will not be something like it. There are some action scenes in the film but it will be a real tragedy. Viewers will really enjoy the film," he said.
The film, the first feature film by Akpınar, is expected to be released in a period between November 2009 and February 2010.
Akpınar’s two short films have received awards in the Toronto, Venezuela and Monpellier festivals.
