A military training aircraft crashed in the Turkish central province of Konya, killing one person, an official told news agencies. (UPDATED)

Sirri Ezdemir, the mayor of the nearby town of Altinekin, told the Anatolian Agency that one pilot was killed in the accident and the other pilot was hospitalized.

The pilots ejected from the F- 4 Phantom-type jet fighter when they failed to regain control after the craft rapidly lost altitude due to a technical fault, Dogan News Agency reported.

Konya is home to a large military base and airspace over the provinces vast plains is used for training flights.

The cause of the crash is not immediately clear.
