Research by Trabzon AKP Party MP Kemalettin Goktas into the near lynching of four youths accused by a crowd of passing out PKK propogranda in Trabzon has revealed a dramatic coincidence behind the beginning of the events. When TAYAD member Zeynep Erdugrul beginning passing out printed matter on one of the busiest streets in Trabzon, one of the first people she handed a paper to was a man in a business suit withdrawing money from a bank machine. This person took one look at the notice, and started to yell "They are passing out PKK information!" at which the man in the business suit then punched Erdugrul. The rumor that PKK flag were being openly displayed passed quickly through the crowds, at which point the events started to grow in seriousness. Â Said MP Goktas, "In Trabzon, a man would never punch a woman, it would be a great shame. So when I heard about this, it seemed strange to me. When I looked into it, I found out that the man who threw the punch had just lost a brother who was a soldier in (Kurdish center) Diyarbakir." Â Goktas, who said he felt very saddened by the events in Trabzon, said he also thought that part of the reason things got so out of control in Trabzon was the general reaction to the flag burning incident in Mersin during Nehvruz. "But the calm and common sense displayed by people at the first event kept things from getting out of hand." Â Â
