Last week we covered in an ample way the Gaza crisis and we do not wish to return to the horrible situation prevailing there. We said what we had to say, however, we would like to make two remarks.

The first one is to congratulate Hugo Chavez for expelling the ambassador of Israel to Venezuela, because of the attack on Gaza. If more leaders of other countries had the guts to do the same maybe the situation would be somewhat different today.

Our second remark concerns an interview given by the president of Syria to CNN. Excerpts of this interview were first broadcast in the evening of Jan. 7, then they were put on the CNN home page Web site. Around noon on Jan. 8 it was removed from the homepage. We wonder why since it gave credit to CNN to have such an interview, which was excellent and allowed the president of Syria to tell his point of view in excellent English. We finally found the interview after much searching in the video section of CNN and we would like to quote excerpts of it for the benefit of our readers.

Tough questions
Question: "The [United States] and the [European Union] have declared Hamas a terrorist organization and some can say that your supporting them is part of the problem. Why not leverage their being here to get them to stop firing rockets from Gaza?"

Answer: "They are leaders but they are not the grassroots. The grassroots live in Gaza, in the Palestinian territory. So they have to listen to the grassroots... How did Hamas come to its position in the government? By election. And this election was supervised by Europeans and by Americans, including ex-President Jimmy Carter. And they said this is a democratic election. So the question, how could you have a terrorist organization elected democratically? They have to revise this contradiction. This means the whole people are terrorists and it doesn’t work. You cannot accuse the whole people as terrorist people... "

In replying to a question that Iran and Syria support Hamas, the Syrian president said: "The support is political, the support of their cause. They are asking for an independent state, and as far as I know the whole world accepts the Palestinian state, but so far nothing has happened. This is the second time they've been under attack from Israel during the truce Ñ even during the truce by the Israeli planes for the last few months. Forty Palestinians were killed. So they have a cause. They are under aggression and not vice-versa. And actually what they do is respond, they don't start. So we support their cause. We support the Palestinian state - independent Palestinian state. And we support that they defend themselves."

Interesting truths said by President Al-Assad, truths that were not amply publicized for reasons unknown to us.

But let’s change subjects and go to useless human inventions. In the middle of an enormous environmental crisis and right before the global crisis you humans invented an electronic paper towel machine that replaced the traditional manual paper towel machine. Why? Presumably for some human to make money. You put your human hands in front of the machine and a paper towel comes out, thus consuming electric power. What was wrong with the manual machine? Nothing. And if there is a power cut, you remain with wet hands.

Ponder our thoughts dear humans for your benefit.
