A Bird’s Eye View: Stopping the bloodshed

You humans have started the New Year in a very bad way that is, however, characteristic of your aggressive attitude. The war taking place in Gaza is senseless and can have no concrete positive result for any side if we look at the lessons that history was supposed to have taught us.

It all started when the blockaded Hamas Palestinian leadership called off extending a cease-fire and started throwing rockets into Israel. As usual, Israel responded by over-bombing Gaza, causing many human deaths as well as material damage. Then last Saturday night, Israel invaded Gaza with land forces and more humans are being killed from both sides. The bloodshed will only stop when the two sides will be forced to meet and find a diplomatic and political solution.

Our question to you humans is why should you reach the negotiating table only after the deaths of hundreds or thousands of humans? Why not before? Is it because Israel has elections soon? So what if it does? Leaders should not be elected on the criteria of how much blood they have shed. The international community has once again proved its inefficiency. The EU met in Paris on New Year’s Eve and came out with a plan to restore a cease-fire but with no practical results yet. Israel has at last succumbed to international pressure and declared that it will stop hostilities for three hours every other day in order to allow the delivery of humanitarian assistance to the Palestinian population. The U.S. stated that Israel has the right to defend itself while only on Tuesday did Obama utter some words of concern about the loss of life there.

Condeming the attack
Sarkozy, still thinking that he has the EU Presidency, visited the area in an effort to find a peaceful solution. Tony Blair has been awakened from his slumber to help. The only country that has been persistently dealing with the issue in a serious way has been Turkey, whose leadership has been in constant contact with all sides to the conflict. Shoe-throwing demonstrations have erupted all over the world to condemn Israel's attack.

But let’s say that Israel does militarily occupy Gaza and arrests or kills the Hamas leadership. What then? Will there be peace and stability? Of course not. The Palestinians of Gaza will take to the streets, demonstrate and resist the occupation by all means. We have seen this many times in the past. So the most logical thing to do is to stop the killing now and start the talking. A solution will be reached that way, but at least it will be a solution that will have avoided the loss of more human life.

But enough bloodshed. Let us see some of the silly products that you humans continue to produce. For example a British design company has launched pre-chewed pencils to help children concentrate at school. The company, called Concentrate, says the pencils look like they have already been chewed making pupils less likely to put them in their mouths. The company specializes in products that help children at school and identify why they get distracted or are unable to concentrate in class. It claims that chewed pencils make them concentrate better. This is total nonsense. We all know that children chew their pencils in an effort to concentrate and not vice-versa. By the way, who chews the pre-chewed pencils?

Ponder our thoughts, dear humans, for your benefit.
