We birds have the pleasure to congratulate the humans of the United States on their new president, Barack Obama. At last after eight years, during which the United States lost all its moral authority and credibility, the United States has acquired a president that can restore the greatness of the United States.
In his inaugural speech, he swept away in 20 minutes, the eight years of his predecessor's failed policies.
It was wonderful to hear him say: "As for our common defense, we reject as false the choice between our safety and our ideals. Our founding fathers, faced with perils we can scarcely imagine, drafted a charter to assure the rule of law and the rights of man, a charter expanded by the blood of generations. Those ideals still light the world and we will not give them up for expedience's sake..." Or: "On this day we gather because we have chosen hope over fear, unity of purpose over conflict and discord. On this day we came to proclaim an end to petty grievances and false promises, the recriminations and worn-out dogmas, that for too long have strangled our politics..."
What wonderful words inaugurating the arrival of fresh liberal air in the White House. Respect for human rights has become a priority over national security. At last the United States has a real president.
But it was not only his words that impressed us. His words were immediately followed by action.
A step for war crime trials at Guantanamo
One of the first things that he did upon assuming office was to request the suspension of all war crime trials at Guantanamo.
He then signed executive orders to effectively end the CIA's secret interrogation program, to close the Guantanamo Bay detention camp within a year and to set up a sweeping review of terrorist suspects. All in one day. Wow, we felt that he must have been an avid reader of our column that had been supporting for the last five years all the measures that he took. He is doing everything that is humanely possible to make the United States great again and our world a little safer.
It will not be easy. But if the political will exists, and it does, his policies should then succeed. Time is needed. And that he has. We wish you all success President Obama.
A few words about his predecessor. The last act of the outgoing president was again shameful.
He pardoned a convicted border guard who was serving time for having shot and killed an unarmed illegal immigrant who had entered the United States from Mexico. Presumably the pardoned human was from Texas.
Anyhow he left. And as his helicopter took off all the eyes of the humans of Washington were fixed on it. They wanted to be absolutely sure and certain that he had gone and would never come back.
Cheney followed him to the dustbin of history in his wheelchair. What more can we say than good riddance to bad rubbish!
Ponder our thoughts dear humans for your benefit.
