ANTALYA - More than 50 hotel managers in the Mediterranean region have been sentenced for the illegal use of shores, the head of the professional body said yesterday.

Speaking to the Anatolia News Agency, Sururi Çorabatır, the Chairman of the Mediterranean Touristic Hoteliers Association of Turkey, or AKTOB said that the hoteliers were imprisoned, for "invading the shores."

Çorabatır criticized the decision of the Manavgat Court, adding that 13 hoteliers had been sentenced to 12 to 16 previously. "Hotels are using shores for their business and paying compensation for using them," Çorabatır said. "But only hoteliers are punished with the 154th article in the Turkish Penal Code."

The mentioned article is about the use of public areas and requires the hoteliers to pay compensation.

"We are waiting for Parliament to change that article," said the chairman. "Hoteliers are not invaders, they are using those areas for a service."

Çorabatır added that there were 400 hotels in Antalya alone that suffered from the law. "The hoteliers are worried because they are the only ones hit with that punishment," he said. "There are lots of buildings, areas and farmlands being used by the private sector, but only the tourism industry suffers."
