Vodafone to invest $755 million in Turkey in 2009

Vodafone's Turkey announced on Tuesday plans to invest of 1.3 billion TL ($755 million) in the country within the year, adding that investments in 2009 would not slow. (UPDATED)

"We plan to increase the number of stores to 900 and employ 500 people more this year," Vodafone CEO Serpil Timuray told reporters at a press meeting in Istanbul, the Anatolian Agency reported.

Timuray, who was appointed to the post on Jan. 1, said that Vodafone had 290 million subscribers in 67 countries and the investments of the company, including takeovers and network infrastructure, reached to $6 billion so far in the country.

Vodafone has spent $1.5 billion in Turkey since acquiring wireless company Telsim in 2006, doubling the network’s capacity, Timuray had earlier said.

Three operators, Turkcell, Vodafone and Avea, are competing for market share in the country of about 72 million, which increased competition by introducing number portability, allowing customers to keep their phone numbers when they change networks. Vodafone
