Polls reveal no cause for celebration on Teachers Day in Turkey

Teachers in Turkey make their living under very difficult circumstances, according to a poll published in Hurriyet daily on Monday, which marks Teacher's Day in the country.

The poll conducted with the participation of 2,178 teachers by an education union, Turk Egitim-Sen; showed that only 6.2 percent of teachers make their living easily.

A total of 44.8 percent of teachers say they make their living under difficult circumstances, while 45 percent can afford to meet only their basic needs.

Over 70 percent of Turkish teachers have credit card or bank debts, the poll also showed.

According to a recent survey carried out by the Organization for European Cooperation and Development (OECD), a Turkish teacher works an average 1,832 hours a year, while teachers work 1,425 hours a year in Spain and 1,440 hours in Portugal.

Among OECD-member countries, the highest annual salary of a teacher is about $54,000, while in Turkey it is only $15,000.
