--LAWYERS CLAIM NO FAIR TRIAL CAN BE CARRIED OUT
The 130 square-meter hearing room of the Silivri prison complex, which was prepared for the first hearing of Ergenekon case months ago, was not big enough to hold the crowd gathered to observe the case. The court could begin hearing the case after a 1.5-hour delay yesterday. A total of 86 defendants, 46 of whom are under arrest, are being tried. Due to the crowd and chaos in the court room, lawyers claimed that the defendants could not receive a fair trial.

There was major confusion at the first hearing of the Ergenekon case which was accused of "causing chaotic atmosphere". When the court hall was packed with people, the judge decided to separately try those who are under arrest and those who are not under arrest. Jurists say a fair trial can not be made with this method.

--COURT ROOM SMALL, BUT CASE BIG
The Ergenekon case, expected to shed light on Turkey's dark history, began problematically due to the throng of people who wanted to follow the case and a small court room. Around 300 people gathered in front of the Silivri prison and wanted to be an interlocutor in the case. They were members of the Human Rights Association, the Socialist Platform of the Oppressed, the Democratic Society Party (DTP), the Free Thought and Education Rights Association (Ozgur-Der), the Socialist Democracy Party, and the Laborer Movement Party, who want to observe the trial of those involved in Ergenekon organization.

On the other hand, members of some associations like the Labor Party, Turkish Youth Union, and the Kemalist Thought Association, who are opposed to the case, protested the trial waving Turkish flags and holding posters of Ataturk. A row erupted in the court room as 400 people came to watch the hearing in the 280-people capacity court room. When lawyers could not find anywhere to sit, arguments broke out.

--DEMOCRACY AGAINST TERRORISM
Speaking in the southeastern province of Diyarbakir, Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan said, "We will go on with our democratization reforms despite terrorism."

--ERDOGAN: WE DO NOT CONSIDER TERRORISM A PRETEXT TO DELAY INVESTMENTS
Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan addressed residents of the southeastern province of Diyarbakir. Erdogan said the government did not see terrorism as a pretext to delay services and investments. "We will continue our reforms on public services, investments and democratization despite terrorism. However, at the same time, we will preserve our sensitivity towards unity, integrity and the security of our country."

--WHAT KIND OF UPS IS THIS?
Although the Justice Ministry sent a note to Turkey's Consulate General in Frankfurt by Urgent Postal Service (UPS) on Oct. 6 requesting the German court's file on the Deniz Feneri case, Germany has not yet received it. The Turkey part of the Deniz Feneri case, carried out by Ankara Chief Prosecutor's Office, can not progress as the file has not arrived in Turkey. As the letters generally reach Germany in 4-8 days, it is impossible to understand why Justice Ministry's UPS was delayed.

The court began hearing the Ergenekon case at the Silivri prison complex court house. A total of 86 defendants are being tried in the case. Chaos erupted in the extremely small court room.

--GOVERNMENT WAKES UP
During the Economy Coordination Committee meeting, participants agreed that several steps should be taken to minimize the impacts of the global economic crisis. State Minister Nazim Ekren said that global and national developments started to affect Turkey's risk premium.

Chaos occurred inside and outside the Silivri prison where the Ergenekon case began to be heard. The sound system was very bad, and the court room was too small for the 86 suspects, their lawyers and families. The judge told those objecting to the small court room that they could not find any other place. Some lawyers demanded that the hearing be postponed. The judge adjourned the hearing to make an interim decision, and later the court decided to try the suspects under arrest first.

--REACTION TO PKK, CRITICISM TO DTP
Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan spoke in Diyarbakir and said, "Shops were closed by force and threat. You talk about democracy and take away the right of citizens to trade. Don't they (the municipality) have a garbage cart? People should give (them) the necessary lesson."

The first hearing of the Ergenekon case was held. The hearing started with delay as the defense complained that court hall was not big enough. Koksal Sengun, the head of the court delegation, said the court decided to hear the statements of suspects who are under arrest and who are not under arrest in separate sessions. The second session will take place on Oct. 23.

--ECONOMY WILL BE MORE SOLID
The Economy Coordination Committee, after assessing the global financial crisis, decided to take steps that would further the strengthen economy. The statement that was released after the meeting said, "The Turkish economy, which is open to the outside world and integrated with the world, is naturally affected by global developments. However, we can say that the impacts of those developments on Turkey are so far limited."
