German-born Cem Ozdemir, whose father and mother came to Germany as guest workers, was elected the co-chairman of the Greens Party. Ozdemir, a European parliamentarian who will chair the Greens Party with Claudia Roth, has been the first politician of Turkish descent to become the chairman of a party in Germany.His success that came after the wind of change prevailing in Europe following Barack Obama in the United States would inspire 2.7 million Turks living in Germany. Greece claimed that a Norwegian vessel, which was exploring oil for Turkey off Kas (a town of Turkish Mediterranean province of Antalya), violated Greek territorial waters. A Greek war ship, which came to the zone, wanted the Norwegian ship --escorted by Turkish frigate "Gediz"-to leave its territorial waters. Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan, who was reluctant to make a new deal with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), retreated in the United States.
Following a meeting with IMF Managing Director Dominique Strauss-Kahn, officials said that Turkey and the IMF agreed to continue works. Strauss-Kahn said he was expecting a result soon.
Erdogan said a solution was close and the IMF assistance would be helpful to weather the crisis.
