--REACTION TO THERMAL POWER PLANT IN AMASRA

Environmentalists reacted to a project on the establishment of a thermal power plant near Amasra town of the northern province of Bartin. Ecologists said a thermal power plant in Amasra would seriously damage the town.

Environment and Forestry Minister Veysel Eroglu faced the protests of residents of Amasra when he visited the town. Huseyin Coban, spokesman for Bartin-Amasra Environment Association, said, "If power plant is established here, there will be no more fish in Amasra."

--TOPTAN BACKS HIS PROPOSAL

Parliament Speaker Koksal Toptan, who is paying a visit to Athens, said that his suggestion about "a double-chamber system" must be debated first and senates could play the role of filter on the way to constitutional courts.

"In my opinion, senates can be filters on the way to constitutional courts. They can contribute to lawmaking and also prevent too much paperwork or problems of the constitutional courts," Toptan stated.

--WILL SALARIES OF WORKERS AND PUBLIC SERVANTS GET CUT?

A new draft income tax law is expected to cut the salaries of workers and public servants in Turkey. Up to 20 percent of salaries may be cut due to the new draft law.

HEADSCARF BANNED IN VAN AGAIN

After the Constitutional Court cancelled an amendment making it possible to wear headscarves in universities, the Yuzuncu Yil University (YYU) in the eastern province of Van began implementing the ban again. Students that could enter the YYU campus with headscarves earlier could not do so as of Monday morning.

--ANOTHER PROPOSAL

Ahmet Iyimaya of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) has proposed that the parliament should have the right to veto decisions made by the Constitutional Court. Leading names of the political party did not welcome the proposal.

--GALATASARAY AGREE WITH GERMAN COACH SKIBBE

Galatasaray, one of Turkey's three largest soccer clubs based in Istanbul, have agreed in principle with Michael Skibbe of Germany as their new coach. Skibbe, who was the coach of Bayer Leverkusen of Germany, came to Istanbul last week and visited the club's facilities in the Florya district.

However, the club has refrained from making a statement about the agreement since talks with French coach Alain Perrin are still continuing. Also, Galatasaray are trying to cut Skibbe's annual salary of 1.8 million euro.

--FLIGHT PERMIT WITH 60 SHORTCOMINGS

A shocking document was revealed about the Atlasjet plane crash that killed 57 people last year.

According to the document, World Focus, which leased the plane to Atlasjet, was inspected 27 days before the accident. Six engineers found 60 shortcomings on the plane. However, civil aviation authority did not cancel its flight license. And on November 30, the plane crash occurred.

--SHOCKING OFFER FROM IYIMAYA

Ruling AK Party deputy Ahmet Iyimaya claimed that the Constitutional Court exceeded its powers and that the court decision should be suspended by the parliament. He also suggested that the court would not be able to review the same law five within years.

--NABUCCO IN ASPENDOS

Opera singers and ballet dancers from the Ankara State Opera and Ballet Directorate will perform Nabucco of Giuseppe Verdi in the 15th Aspendos International Opera and Ballet Festival. Italian conductor Bruno Aprea will conduct the orchestra.

--PROTEST IN TUZLA

A group of people from the Confederation of Revolutionary Trade Unions of Turkey (DISK) protested killing of workers in Tuzla. 98 workers had died in shipyards in Tuzla in the past 10 years.

--AKP SEEKS WAYS TO STOP CONSTITUTIONAL COURT

Ahmet Iyimaya of the ruling AKP, chairman of the Parliamentary Justice Commission, has proposed that decisions made by the Constitutional Court could be suspended with a three fifth majority in parliament. "There is a Constitutional Court crisis in Turkey," he said.

However, his proposal was not welcomed by his colleagues in the AKP. State Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Cemil Cicek said that it was Iyimiya's personal thought and members of the central executive board of the political party did not discuss it.

--RULING AKP'S PLAN B: FORMATION OF A NEW PARTY WITHIN TWO-THREE WEEKS

The ruling Justice & Development Party is getting ready to form a new political party in case of any decision to be made by the Constitutional Court for closure. If the court decides to outlaw the political party, its assets will be handed over to the Turkish Treasury. The executive board of the ruling AKP also seeks ways to keep its assets.

--TURK ALERT IN BASEL

Swiss police will not let Turkish people, even with EU passports, out of reserved space at the Basel stadium which will host Turkey and Switzerland today at 9:45 p.m. for the Euro 2008 group match. Police will check passports at the gates in order to stop more Turkish fans entering the stadium.

However, tens of thousands of Turkish people flocked to Basel from Germany and nearby countries and who are now searching for tickets on the black market.

Chief of General Staff Gen. Yasar Buyukanit paraded new uniforms designed for the Turkish Armed Forces. The new uniforms, designed by fashion designer Arzu Kaprol, are water-proof, non-sweating and antibacterial and produced by the help of nanotechnology.

The uniforms have patterns suitable for the floras of 7 geographical regions of Turkey and can not be spotted by satellites.
