A judge in Germany's most populous state of the North Rhine-Westphalia ordered a 36-year-old Muslim teacher to remove the beret she had been wearing pulled down over her hair in class since the state passed legislation forbidding teachers from wearing head scarves several years ago. The teacher could be fired if she fails to comply with the ruling.
The identity of the teacher involved in Thursday's ruling was not released. Her lawyer said she would appeal.
Regional law in North Rhine-Westphalia does not allow for religious statements that might infringe on the state's neutrality toward students and parents.
