The National Civil Aviation Authority (ENAC) will determine whether the stricken company had any new bailout offers after unions rejected a lifeline by an Italian consortium because of proposed mass job cuts.

The body would conduct its probe for six to 10 days and if its finding are negative, AFP said citing the source. "Alitalia will be grounded."

Suffering from the high fuel prices and an economic downturn that have hit the sector globally, Alitalia has been on the brink of collapse for years as political interference and labor unrest have bled it of cash and caused it to pile up debt.Alitalia has been operating under bankruptcy protection since the end of August and its special administrator is due to meet ENAC on Monday to see whether it can retain its operating license."If there is nothing concrete on the table, within a week or at most 10 days, the aircraft will no longer be allowed to take off," ENAC chairman told financial daily MF.
