ANKARA - Turkey's auto industry may shed 100,000 jobs as demand shrinks for cars in Europe and at home, Vatan newspaper reported, citing ?zlem Gülşen, chief of the Association of Automotive Parts and Components Manufacturers.

The government should take "urgent measures" as manufacturers and parts' makers slash working hours, Gülşen said, according to the Istanbul-based newspaper. Producers will probably make less than half of the vehicles they had targeted this year, she said.

Spare parts factories, employing about 200,000 people nationwide, are working three days a week instead of six and two shifts a day instead of three, slashing salaries and firing workers, Gülşen said. Ford Motor and Fiat are among automakers operating factories in Turkey with local partners.
