The Pacific island of Samoa has recognized Kosovo’s independence, becoming the 46th nation to do so, the government of the breakaway Serbian province said Tuesday.
"We received a written note from the government of Samoa in which they recognized the independence of Kosovo," foreign ministry spokeswoman Albana Beqiri told AFP.
In the message, Samoa expressed hope that Kosovo’s independence would help to achieve "stability in the region" of the Balkans.
Ethnic Albanian-majority Kosovo declared independence from Serbia on Feb. 17. It was promptly recognized by the United States and most of the European Union, but rejected by Serbia and its ally Russia.
