Turkey has become the new "international operation base" of a leading European healthcare company.

GE Healthcare, General Electric's (GE) healthcare services branch worth $17 billion, will start managing its operations in the Eastern and Asian markets (EAGM), from Turkey.

GE Healthcare decided to combine the EAGM region into a single "International Diagnostic Imaging" operation, and conduct its activities from Istanbul, officials from GE Healthcare and Turkey's Investment Support and Promotion Agency said at a joint press conference on Friday.

The EAGM region covers the Middle East, Africa, Turkey and Central Asia, and Russia and CIS Countries. The new operation will mainly focus on and accelerate GE's growth in equipment and services markets in the region.

The EAGM region, which accounted for more than $600 million in revenue in 2007, is expected to double the figure to $1.2 billion by 2010, thanks to the new structuring.

Richard di Benedetto has been appointed as the president and CEO of GE Healthcare International-EAGM region.
