Three European nations on Saturday threatened to oppose credit guarantees for the construction of the Ilisu dam in Turkey if Ankara disregards environmental and social commitments linked to the project.

Economy ministers for Germany, Austria and Switzerland issued the threat over the massive project as they met in Duernstein, Austria.  Â

The three nations had initially approved guarantees to companies from their own countries that were investing in the 1.2 billion euro ($1.9 billion) project near the Iraq border.

National credit agencies from the three countries are to hold a meeting on the subject in mid-June, Swiss minister Doris Leuthard said.

Environmental and civil society groups have sharply criticised the dam construction because it would lead to the displacement of some 50,000 people and flood historical ruins from ancient Mesopotamia.

The project aims to harness the energy of the Tigris river. Â
