The leader of pro-Kurdish party DTP has resigned two days after he was released from jail and will perform his military service, state-run Anatolian Agency reported on Wednesday.

Nurettin Demirtas, 35, has been facing trial on charges of using fake health reports in order to get out of compulsory military service. Demirtas was handed over to the Gendarmerie Command in Safranbolu town of the northwestern city of Karabuk on Tuesday to fulfill his military service.

Demirtas is suspected of forging documents to avoid a mandatory military duty. He faces up to five years in prison.

Demirtas is not a member of parliament but was elected head of the party in November. The DTP has 20 members of parliament.
