The mayor of a southearn province of Turkey on Thursday was sentenced to 50 days in jail for praising the outlawed PKK separatists, the Dogan News Agency reported. The court later commuted the sentence to a fine.
Diyarbakir mayor, Osman Baydemir, was found guilty on charges of "praising crime and criminals" following remarks he made during deadly unrest in the city in March last year.
The court then commuted the sentence to a $1,133 fine.
Turkey and most of the international community, including the EU and the U.S., consider the PKK a terrorist organization.
