Turkish parliament debates operation vs PKK in Feb

A preliminary session on the cross-border operation Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) staged into north of Iraq in February, began at the Turkish parliament on Thursday. The debate is taking place under a motion submitted by the main opposition CHP.

TSK launched a cross-border ground operation into north of Iraq on February 21st in order to neutralize members of the PKK positions stationed in north of Iraq and to destroy organizational infrastructure in the region. On February 29th, Turkish
troops returned to bases in Turkey.

The preliminary session goes on behind closed doors within the framework of a motion submitted by MPs of the ruling AKP. According to sources, Turkish State Minister & Deputy PM Cemil Cicek will speak on the cross-border operation on behalf of the government.

Nihat Ergun, the deputy chairman of the AKP group in parliament, will express views on behalf of the AKP group, whereas MP Onur Oymen and Sukru Elekdag will talk on behalf of the CHP. Other possible speakers in the session will be Gunduz Suphi Aktan of the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) and Hasip Kaplan of the pro-Kurdish Democratic Society Party (DTP).

Five bureaucrats from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs are also participating in the session, according to a motion by FM Ali Babacan.  �
