ISTANBUL - Istanbul Modern Cinema, in collaboration with the Goethe-Institute Istanbul, presents a film retrospective of Ulrike Ottinger, one of the most important filmmakers of German feminist cinema. Starting Thursday, the event will continue through June 11.
Her involvement with a variety of art media allows the director to create an interdisciplinary
film language. Pushing the lines between documentary and fiction, and offering pictorial power with absurd theatrical scenes or visuals that are reminiscent of photographs, her films create a distinctive watching experience. The program includes "Exile Shanghai" and "Johanna d’Arc of Mongolia," two of her most noted films. The retrospective also presents her latest film, "The Korean Wedding Chest," which made its world premiere at the International Berlin Film Festival in February.
New films from Germany
From June 25-28, Istanbul Modern Cinema will also present a selection of German films that have premiered in the past year.
The selection of eight films, which were first seen by critics and viewers in festivals like Berlin, Cannes, Venice, Toronto and Sundance, is ironically titled "Everything’s OK." What almost all the films in the program have in common, whether they reflect the past or today, whether they tell a personal or a universal story, is that they draw attention to things that are not OK.
All films will be screened with Turkish subtitles. The screenings are free for museum visitors.
