ANKARA - Children who live in Ankara’s Altındağ district, an area with a high crime rate, have started taking the stage instead of playing in the streets thanks to a project initiated by the Ankara Police Department.
The theater group named Polis Amca Children of Hope Stage, which is made up of Polis Amca Primary School students, has appeared on theater stages in various Turkish cities and abroad for five years.
Disadvantageous district
Ankara Police Department Research and Development Director Ibrahim Çapan said they initiated the project to help socialize children living in Altındağ, which is seen as a "disadvantageous" district. He said the project, titled "Yarınlar Daha Güzel Olsun" (Let the Future Be Much Nicer), had been carried out for five years. "This project is very important to change the children’s attitudes. The children’s environment affects them negatively. We are trying to make it positive."
Çapan said the project was implemented in four schools that were chosen from 17 in the area. Çapan said rehearsals were performed on Police Department and State Theaters stages, adding that the children were driven from their homes to rehearsals. He said as part of the project, 122 strategic events including folk dances and painting were also organized.
"They performed four plays and joined six international children’s, youth and theater festivals in the last four years," Çapan said, adding that they went abroad recently upon the invitation of a school in Ukraine.
