ISTANBUL - Renowned Turkish pianist Fazıl Say’s first violin concerto, "1001 Nights in a Harem," will premiere Sunday at the Cemal Reşit Rey, or CRR, concert hall.
According to a statement from CRR, "1001 Nights in a Harem," establishes a bridge between traditional Turkish music culture and European music culture. The world premiere in the Swiss city of Lucerne generated great interest and now the concerto will greet audiences from its own country.
The Turkish premiere of the concerto will be Sunday and accompanied by the CRR Istanbul Symphonic Orchestra, conducted by John Axelrod. The soloist of the concert will be Patricia Kopatchinskaja.
Mozart’s overture "The Abduction from the Seraglio" and his piano concerto No: 21 will be performed as well as Say’s violin and piano sonata.
Bringing together modernism, Turkish music culture and the art of playing the violin, "1001 Nights in a Harem" was successfully completed, by order of the Swiss Lucerne Symphony Orchestra, at the beginning of 2008 and first performed Feb. 20.
