Turkey will increase its imports of gas from Iran to compensate for a reduction in supplies from Azerbaijan resulting from the conflict in Georgia, Reuters reported citing a senior source from the Turkish pipeline company Botas on Tuesday. The Iranian president will pay a two-day visit to Turkey on Thursday, during which energy relation talks are expected to top the agenda. (UPDATED)
BP announced on Tuesday that it closed the Georgian South Caucasus gas pipeline, also known as the Baku-Tbilisi-Erzurum Pipeline or Shakh-Deniz Pipeline, transporting natural gas from the Shah Deniz gas field in the Azerbaijan sector of the Caspian Sea to Turkey, because of the ongoing conflict with Russia.
According to the Turkish pipeline company, Botas, the gas in the pipeline is enough to flow for at least a week.
IRANIAN PRESIDENT'S VISIT
Turkey and Iran will hold talks on energy relations during the two-day visit of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who will be accompanied by a delegation including the Iranian Oil Minister, to Turkey on Thursday, the Tehran Times reported on Wednesday.
Developing Iran and Turkey’s mutual cooperation in the energy sector is among the topics that the Iranian delegation aims to discuss with Turkey, said the Tehran Times
Based on a memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed last summer, Iran and Turkey have sought ways to increase cooperation in oil and gas, as well as agreeing to build a gas pipeline to transport Iran’s gas to Europe via Turkey.
Increasing Iranian gas export volume to Turkey and reaching agreement on a transportation tariff for the transit of Turkmenistan gas to Turkey via Iran, were among the other topics included in the MOU.
Turkey also stated its readiness to invest in Iran’s South Pars gas field, the Tehran Times said.
