ISTANBUL - A retired Turkish general and a former intelligence organization senior official gave their depositions to authorities as part of the country's controversial Ergenekon probe on Thursday. (UPDATED)

The Ergenekon prosecutors took depositions from retired General Cevik Bir and former senior official from the National Intelligence Organization, or MIT, Nuri Gundes.

The two are giving their statements as witnesses for the prosecution, according to reports. Â

Their depositions covered allegedly attempted coups codenamed Sarikiz, Ayisigi, Yakamoz and Eldiven, which were included in the Ergenekon indictment, the reports added.

Launched in 2007, the Ergenekon case has detained more than 200 on suspicion of forming an illegal organization to provoke a series of events that would pave the way to a military coup. About 140 people are already standing trial in the case, including retired generals, lawyers and journalists.

The controversial case, however, has divided Turkey, as many believe it has turned into a witch hunt targeting government critics.
