ANKARA - With no original document of the alleged military plan to bring down the ruling government, leading to uncertainty over the future of the judicial case, the Turkish military has launched a comprehensive probe into the allegations.
Ergenekon prosecutors, meanwhile, announced Wednesday that they had given up the deposition of military Col. Dursun Çelik, who is reported to have prepared the alleged plan. Instead, they said they would wait for the results of the forensic examination of his signature on the alleged document.
"The original copy of the document doesn’t exist. A definite result may not thus be obtained as a result of the forensic examination," said Ergenekon prosecutor Turan Çolakkadı. "The document is a photocopy. Çelik’s deposition will be taken if it is deemed necessary in line with the result of the forensic examination of his signature," he noted.
Daily Taraf last week published a document, allegedly drafted by a military colonel, that contained a plan to fight fundamentalism and religious movements.
The document was particularly aimed at the ruling Justice and Development Party, or AKP, and the Gülen movement, which are accused of trying to undermine Turkey’s secular order and establish an Islamic state. Following Chief of General Staff Gen. İlker Başbuğ’s remarks that they would follow the issue to the end, the General Staff has launched a comprehensive investigation into whether the document is forged or real.
The document, which is claimed to have been signed by Çelik and was requested from the Istanbul Prosecutor's Office by the General Staff as a basis for the technical examination and military investigation, was sent to the General Staff. The General Staff is now examining the document to ascertain whether the signature is real, if it was written in line with the military style and on which computer the document was written.
Measures to prevent leaks
The General Staff has taken measures in the past few years in an effort to prevent incidences of leaked military documents and forged document. Among them is the use of code instead of a signature, special ink and paper, inserting particular words and signs as well as making intentional mistakes on the documents. In these types of documents, the document does not solely carry the signature of a single military official but the signatures of a series of senior military officials. The military prosecutors are expected to reach a conclusion as a result of these types of examinations.
