ANKARA - The government should remain at an equal distance to different religious beliefs and pressure on different religious beliefs is not in line with the rule of law, said State Minister Faruk Çelik at the closing of the Alevi Workshop in Ankara yesterday.
"We held the first meeting in a lineup of other meetings in an effort to discuss the demands voiced by the Alevi community in Turkey and the steps to be taken in this respect," Çelik said. He said the Alevi community’s demands and expectations were more clearly identified in the meeting and solution proposals were discussed together with representatives from the Alevi organizations.
The Alevi Workshop, which kicked off Wednesday in Ankara, was the first major event held by the government to identify the requirements of the Alevi community in Turkey as part of its Alevi initiative and find a collective solution to the Alevis’ problems. Representatives from 35 Alevi organizations also attended the meeting.
