ANKARA - A teacher at a primary school in the Polatlı region of Ankara was fined for saying the school was dirty and that donations asked for by the school were unconstitutional.
Mehmet Kaval, a teacher with 17 years of experience, said he faced an inquiry after he told his pupils that the monthly stipend collected from the students was unconstitutional and that the school was dirty.
Polatlı Education Director Necmettin Özdemir, who launched the inquiry, said Kaval’s salary was cut by one-thirtieth for insulting teachers and administrators and trying to officially record that the school was dirty. Kaval dismissed claims that he insulted anyone.
"I defended myself by saying that Article 42 of the Constitution said education was free and that collection of money from the students was illegal. The inquiry and the fine is political and mistaken," he said. Kaval also said he would take the matter to court.
