ISTANBUL - Gürbüz Çapan, former mayor of Esenyurt and a suspect in the Ergenekon case, was sentenced in a different case for embezzlement, of which he had been awaiting trial for eight years.

Çapan was sentenced to one year and eight months for "founding an organization to commit crime" alongside three years and four months for "receiving a bribe," to total five years.

Brother also found guilty

"Conspiring to rig bids on a tender," the other charge Çapan was facing, was dropped as the case exceeded the criminal limitations period. The court also ruled Çapan would be under supervision after his release. Çapan was not present at the court when the verdict was read due to health problems, while nine others were being charged with "being members of an organization founded to commit crime" with a sentence of 10 months. Three of those, including Zeki Çapan, Gürbüz’s brother, were found guilty.

Also, 16 others accused were found guilty of "offering and receiving bribes" and were sentenced to three years and four months each. Other related cases featuring 69 accused, including Gürbüz Çapan’s father and former wife, were dropped due to the criminal limitations period.
