MARMARİS - Closed for three years after it was burgled in 2001, the Marmaris Museum in the Muğla resort town has dissatisfied local residents over the lack of renovation.

Muğla Province Tourism Director Murat Süslü said: "We have to reorganize this museum, which at the moment looks like jewelry store’s front window." Marmaris Local Governor Serdar Polat said: "Marmaris needs a Culture and Art Center including a museum."

Marmaris Museum Manager Esengül Yıldız Öztekin, providing information on the museum, said the museum was closed to visitors for three years after two oil lamps were stolen from the archaeology hallin 2001. She said that after the theft an investigation into security measures found reported that not enough was being done and the museum closed to visitors. "We have installed a surveillance system and spent 109,000 liras to increase security measures. It was visited by 53 people last years." Süslü said: "Museums are a educational instrument. We have to get rid of the museums’ jewelry store window appearance. We have to make this museum a special place. It is very difficult to display archaeological artifacts in old buildings. Most of the artifacts remain in storage. For that reason we need a modern museum." The local governor, Polat, added that it was a must to have a culture and art center in Marmaris.
