ISTANBUL - Tens of thousands of people in Turkey are protesting the arrests of university professors and other prominent journalists, intellectuals, artists and members of the country's armed forces, accused of involvement in an alleged plot to topple the government.

Authorities say at least 30,000 protesters gathered in downtown Ankara on Sunday waving Turkish flags and carrying posters of late leader Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, chanting: "We are soldiers of Ataturk!"

The Ergenekon case, launched in 2007, was filed against more than 200 people on the charge of forming an illegal organization to provoke a series of events that would pave the way for a military coup.

The controversial case, however, has divided Turkey, as many believe it has turned into a witch hunt targeting government critics

The protesters will later march to the mausoleum of Ataturk, who established the secular republic following the collapse of the Ottoman Empire.
