Video footage of the protest showed an officer from the special operations unit beating the boy in the head with a truncheon and then kicking him as he lay on the ground.

A top gendarmerie commander, Yurdaer Olcan, visited the injured Turan in hospital on Friday in the eastern province of Van, where he is receiving medical treatment.

The state-run news Anatolian Agency said four people were detained and three protesters were injured in Thursday’s demonstration in the southeastern province of Hakkari.

The demonstrators barricaded roads and threw stones at police to denounce the detentions last week of more than 200 people in nationwide anti-terror operations.

The Anatolian Agency reported the two inspectors were appointed to investigate the incident and that the police officer involved had been suspended. The report of the investigation will be sent to the headquarters of security forces, the report added.
